Our Seven-Year Journey with Artscape

For many, Artscape is regarded as one of South Africa's premier performing arts venues—a stage where acclaimed artists showcase their exceptional talent. It is often seen as a space reserved for established performers, leaving many community groups believing that such an opportunity is beyond their reach.

At the First Community Resource Centre (FCRC) in Hanover Park, however, we have always believed that talent, passion, and powerful stories can come from any community. For many years, our productions were performed at the St Joseph's Stone Auditorium, where every show was met with overwhelming support and sold-out audiences.

Seven years ago, we dared to dream bigger. We believed our performers deserved the opportunity to take the stage at Artscape, sharing the voices, creativity, and resilience of our community with a wider audience.

During our very first meeting, the then Artscape Manager greeted us with a question we have never forgotten:

"How did you get here?"

Rather than discouraging us, that question became a source of motivation. We were determined to prove that community theatre belongs on every stage, including one of the country's most prestigious.

Today, that vision has become a reality. What began as an ambitious dream has grown into a valued partnership. FCRC is proud to be an Artscape partner, presenting productions that celebrate hope, transformation, and the remarkable talent found within our communities.

Our journey with Artscape is more than a story about theatre—it is a testament to what can happen when opportunity meets determination. It reminds us that excellence is not defined by where you come from, but by the passion, dedication, and purpose you bring to the stage.
