"The Interrupters"
Photographic Exhibition by Lee-Ann Olwage

The Interrupters Exhibition
The Interrupters is a powerful photographic exhibition created in collaboration with CeaseFire Hanover Park and the City of Cape Town. Through compelling portraits and personal stories, the exhibition highlights the lives of former gang members who have transformed their futures and are now working to reduce violence in their own communities.
These remarkable men have overcome significant challenges and now serve as professional Violence Interrupters within the CeaseFire programme. Drawing on their lived experience and credibility within their communities, they help prevent conflict, mediate disputes, and mentor young people who are at risk of becoming involved in gangs. Their stories demonstrate that lasting change is possible and that hope can flourish even in the most difficult circumstances.
The exhibition aims to inspire communities by showcasing real stories of transformation while encouraging meaningful conversations about the social and economic factors that contribute to gang involvement on the Cape Flats. More importantly, it highlights practical, community-led solutions that are creating safer neighbourhoods and brighter futures.
A unique aspect of The Interrupters is its interactive approach. Rather than separating the artwork from the people it represents, the exhibition invites the featured Violence Interrupters to engage directly with visitors. This creates opportunities for honest dialogue, breaks down social barriers, and fosters greater understanding between the subjects, the artwork, and the audience.
