Computer Literacy Course at Camp Joy
Empowering Communities Through Digital Skills
At the Camp Joy Restoration Centre, the Family and Community Restoration Centre (FCRC) believes that digital literacy opens doors to education, employment, and personal growth. Our Basic Computer Literacy Course equips participants with practical computer skills that increase confidence and improve opportunities in today's technology-driven world.
Designed for beginners, this 10-week part-time programme consists of two-hour classes held twice a week. Training is instructor-led and highly practical, with every participant working individually on a computer in a supportive learning environment.
What Participants Will Learn
The course introduces the fundamentals of computer use while focusing on the Microsoft Office Suite—the software most commonly used in workplaces around the world. Participants also learn how technology can be used for communication, creativity, research, and organisation.
Course topics include:
- Basic computer concepts
- Microsoft Windows
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Outlook
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Internet and email fundamentals
- Digital communication and online research
- Basic image editing and presentation skills
Learning Through Practical Experience
No previous computer experience is required. Whether participants are complete beginners or already have some computer knowledge, the course provides opportunities for everyone to learn and grow.
We encourage teamwork, collaboration, and peer learning. Participants develop not only technical skills but also confidence, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to support and teach others—valuable qualities in any workplace.
Our Computer Laboratory
Training takes place in our fully equipped computer laboratory at Camp Joy Restoration Centre, 2 Camp Drive, Strandfontein.
The facility features Microsoft Windows-compatible computers and provides a safe, welcoming space for learning. The laboratory serves:
- Camp Joy restoration programme participants
- Members of the Strandfontein community
- School learners from the nearby informal settlement known as Die Tak
Plans are also in place to offer an Open Lab during weekends, allowing registered participants to practise their skills outside of class through a booking system.
Course Requirements
Participants are required to bring:
- An A4 hardcover notebook
- A pen
- A 16GB USB flash drive for saving course material
No textbooks are required.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have a solid foundation in computer literacy and be able to confidently use essential office applications for work, study, and everyday life.
Participants will also complete an assessment at the end of the programme to demonstrate the skills they have acquired.
Who Can Apply?
The course is open to anyone who:
- Has a minimum Grade 10 level of education
- Can read and write
- Has a willingness to learn
Priority is given to residents of the Strandfontein community, although applicants from neighbouring communities are also welcome.
Supporting Young People Through Technology
The Camp Joy Computer Lab also plays an important role in supporting learners from Die Tak. Through structured after-school sessions, primary and secondary school learners are introduced to computers in a safe and encouraging environment.
The programme gives young people access to technology they may not otherwise have, helping them complete school assignments, develop digital skills, and prepare for future educational and employment opportunities.
At FCRC, we believe that investing in digital education today creates stronger individuals, healthier communities, and brighter futures for tomorrow.
